Day #9 big jump to Burgos

We've known from the beginning that we would not be able to walk more than about half of the Camino.  We've studied Brierley and had many discussions about which parts we would do.  We've made decisions and revised them as we've walked and learned from our experience.  Originally we were going to walk the beginning, a part in the middle, and then the last 100 km from Sarria to Santiago.  However we have realized how difficult it is to figure out transportation, and how much time transport eats up.  So we bussed from Los Arcos to Logroño to Burgos today and tomorrow we bus from Burgos to Leon to Ponferrados.  From there we will walk the rest of the way to Santiago in the remaining 13 days to arrive on the 24th.

We arrived in Burgos early afternoon and walked over the river and through impressive gates into the center in front of the huge and beautiful cathedral that maybe was an inspiration for Gaudi.  As early as we were, the Albergues were both full, but we fairly easily found a hotel that was actually cheaper than the one in Irache (no pool though).

We've explored the central city a bit, had a delicious menu perigrino, and went to a mass at the Cathedral.  It is a beautiful city, full of energy -- lots of tourists and families with children in the huge plazas.  Seems a bit more conservative than Barcelona.

  1. What got this walk started? Seems most Christians head to Jerusalem.

  2. G sends best wishes. You guys are inspirers; we' ll head out to Toronto soon and then drift further west as the spirit moves us. Movement's wonderful for the spirits, si?

  3. Can you say more about what kind of leap forward you took and what's ahead of you? I would have loved to see more pics. Did Gaudi spend any time there?
My life seems so boring compared to you and Chris and Georgia. I should plan a trip to Afghanistan so I could have some edge.

Will you start going to mass with me?

  4. How are the walking hours? Are they meditative? Sounds like a good community of walkers! I am super impressed you are doing this.
